MARION, Iowa (AP) — The White House plans to honor a Marion man on Friday for his efforts to provide shoes for children who cannot afford them as part of its “Champion of Change” program.
Tom Barnes is one of 12 Rotary International members to be touted for their community work at a ceremony at 1 p.m. Eastern time on Friday.
Barnes took over a “Shoes for Kids” program, raising more than $50,000 to provide shoes to 3,500 children. The program also has supported victims of major disasters in Iowa and recently sent 80 pairs of shoes to Nigeria to donate to a local orphanage.
The Champions of Change program was created as an opportunity for the White house to honor individuals, businesses and organizations working to empower and inspire members of their communities.
