MASON CITY, IA – In the radio business, it’s all about the music but for Lana Schaefer it’s all about volunteering. And while she hasn’t been at KCMR in Mason City for very long, her contributions quickly gained some recognition from her peers.
“She’s a wonderful person when it comes to family or friends if they’re ill and they have medical appointments. She’s there for you if you need her and she’s just dedicated to whatever she does,” said Sandy Flugge who nominated Lana.
That dedication is why Lana was chosen as the Giving Your Best volunteer for the month of April. And why her crew surprised her with the award.
“I was clueless. They got me. It doesn’t happen very often but they got me,” said Schaefer.
But volunteering isn’t new to Lana…she says her family taught her the value of giving of yourself and of your time and she has done that through KCMR, 4-H and being on the Cerro Gordo Iowa State University extension council. She says that if you’ve got the time and interest, there are many worthy causes looking for a few good volunteers.
“You know, get a hold of someone and talk to them find out what’s involved. You’re not going to lose anything by at least talking to them and finding out what’s involved, what they actually do,” said Schaefer.
So if you don’t hear Lana on the radio, you’ll probably catch her around town helping out other organizations.
