charges after being accused of hurting his former girlfriend whom he lived with at the time. The prosecution spent most of the day talking to witnesses about the victim’s injuries and asking the responding officers on duty that night to recall details of the scene. Two medical doctors who treated the victim, took the stand early today.
They both talked about significant bruising to her face and neck that are consistent with strangulation.
They also said she had bleeding between her skull and brain along with an inner ear injury. The responding officers told the jury when they arrived at the home in December, Purvis told them he had taken pills and couldn’t remember much of what happened..but indicated it revolved around another man.
They also heard a detailed account from the victim herself.
“She told me at first Purvis tried to strangle her with his hands he then grabbed a chain necklace that was around his neck and wrapped it around her neck,” said Officer Matt Heuer with the Mason City Police Department.
The jury was also able to see the entire taped interrogation of Purvis after he was taken into custody.
At the end of that recording Purvis did admit to slapping and punching the victim and quote “making her have sex.”
The defense also asked for a mis-trial today.
During questioning..one of the doctors mentioned that Purvis was in jail.
The judge denied the motion, saying the damage done was not serious enough to warrant a mis-trial.
