Mason City, Iowa – “If they say they are going to take these guns off the street, they’re taking the legal ones not the illegal ones.”

Donald Katterhenry, from Mason City, is a firm believer in law-abiding citizens being able to own a gun.

He says the problem comes in when owners aren’t responsible.

“People that buy the straw purchases, people that are buying.  Like using Newtown; Mom bought the weapons, he kills his mother than takes the weapons. Background checks wouldn’t have stopped him,” said Katterhenry.

The tragedy of what happened in Newtown is what sparked the recent talk of tighter gun control.

But Kemlin Hart, Owner of Hart Brothers Weaponry, says what’s already in place doesn’t need to be touched.

“If you buy a handgun on the internet or rifle, shotgun for that matter it has to get transferred to a dealer. That dealer has to do the same paperwork you would do if you were to walk in and buy something that was on hand,” said Hart.

Hart says it works the same at gun shows.

And in his opinion, most of the new laws being discussed don’t get at the real problem.

“Criminals don’t buy guns from good people.  They don’t come into gun shops and buy them. They’re not going to gun shows and filling out paperwork.  They can regulate us law-abiding citizens as much as they want and not get any further than they’ve already gotten,” Hart.

“They need to back off on this gun control. Let the law-abiding citizens protect themselves stop punishing the law-abiding citizen that hasn’t done anything wrong because a criminal might do something wrong,” said Katterhenry.
