“Walking Moai” Launch In Mason City

BLUE ZONES-VO 6

MASON CITY, IA — It could be a simple stroll in the park for some; but one group is helping to turn that into a lifetime of well-being.

Members of the community are asked to take part in a walk for the Blue Zone Project Walking Moai as part of the healthy living initiative; people are asked to team up and organize walking days to promote healthy activity.

Teams are encouraged to walk throughout the community to points of interest and build friendships while tracking their steps and time together.

Something one organizer says will help bring a sense of community back to Mason City.

“We know that part of our well-being is determined by our social connections so we want to provide opportunities for people to be connected socially with other people and we want people to find other people who have the same goals and values for well-being. To try to get them together so that they can be connected,” says Marty Garrett, Project Coordinator.

Since May of last year, Mason City has been one of four first demonstration sites in Iowa for the Blue Zone Project.

Now with 18 other demonstration communities are receiving help from experts to develop and implement a Blueprint for making permanent environmental, social and policy changes that transition people into healthier behaviors. Behaviors that according to the group can help promote longer, happier lives.
