MASON CITY, IA-While the search for clues – and evidence – continues, authorities are still working to re-construct the scene, so they can figure out what exactly happened on Monday.
New FBI photos from the bombing site are starting to shed some light, especially when it comes to the device used in the explosions.
From twisted metal, nails, and bolts..a lot of items have been recovered from the scene in Boston.
Authorities are calling this a “pressure cooker bomb” packed with shrapnel, which is something that can be found on store shelves in every town across America.
And some believe – this event could change how we understand terrorism.
It’s a scene that has people all over the world asking questions.
Now, FBI photos are starting to paint a picture of the device used to turn the historic Boston Marathon – into a race of terror.
Evidence suggests a pressure cooker bomb was used….an appliance that’s been around for years.
“It puts off steam and builds up to actually cook the foods and seal lids and jars and everything,” said Assistant Manager at Kramer Ace Hardware in Mason City Linda Germundson.
The cooker can be dangerous, but it’s mostly the older models that cause trouble.
“The pressure builds up and sometimes the lid would blow off. Now, they are just very safe, the lids lock on,” said Germundson.
Federal authorities are saying the cooker used, contained shrapnel, making the bomb similar to the ones used in Middle Eastern terrorist attacks.
Something many American troops have dealt with.
“They are called IEDs “improvised explosive devices” like the pressure cooker that could sort of fly under the radar screen as an act of terrorism, but they could absolutely wreak havoc in the U.S. on various activities/events where these things could cause tremendous destruction like what you saw in Boston,” said Political Science Professor, John Schmaltz.
At this time, authorities still do not know the motive for the attack, or if the act of terrorism was domestic – or foreign.
“Terrorism is a calculated act of violence done for political, ideological or religious reasons,” said Schmaltz.
But either way, Schmaltz says our country will be fighting a war that is both physical and psychological.
“That’s the thing about terrorist, they don’t think they are doing anything wrong, they actually believe in this cause,” said Schmaltz.
Schmaltz also tells us – if it does turn out that it’s a foreign terrorist “group” behind the bombings- those involved will usually take responsibility to further their cause, but so far nobody has come forward.
The attack killed three – and left more than 170 injured.
