CLEAR LAKE, IA — Those in our area took advantage of the nice weather we have today with an Earth Day event in Clear Lake.
The daylong event acts as a way for kids and their parents to get a better understanding of their environment while cleaning up the park.
It’s something that one event organizers says is a responsibility parents should instill in their children as soon as they can.
“As somebody who’s a naturalist, I am very passionate about nature and the outdoors and I think we have a responsibility to make sure that we’re giving the future generations guidance, where their priorities should be,” said Mike Havlik, YMCA Event Coordinator
Mike also mentions that while guidance is important, the true influence comes from the conversation between the kids and the adults.
“I think it’s important that we set aside a day. If we try and do this every day it’s one of those things that gets put off. It’s nice to just put a date on the calendar that says today our focus is the environment and the Earth and I think to instill kids that taking care of this Earth is part of their responsibility,” said Havlik.
Kids worked along their parents in a variety of events, whether its working on a tent, doing a community clean up or building your own bird house, everyone got to experience the environment in their own way.
