Clear Lake, Iowa – It’s a scene that still brings tears to Katie Showalter’s eyes.
“I kept asking him to give him back and wasn’t giving him up, and the only thing I knew was, screaming so I just started Kasen calming down and telling him it’s going to be ok,” said Showalter.
As you can see in the video, Showalter’s six month old son Kasen, is being ripped out of the hands of her friend.
Johnathon Workman is accused of grabbing the baby, while Showalter stepped away for a moment.
Witnesses say he was convinced that it was his baby named MJ.
But with the help of those at the bar, the man didn’t get far.
“Its pretty close-knit here. Most the people we have in here, there was a few in here eating, luckily three people had walked in right before everything happened so they helped,” said Showalter.
Police were called to the bar and Workman was arrested and charged with child stealing and two counts of assault.
“Some people might think its kidnapping is where you take someone and you try to conceal them or keep them hidden from others in this case, it was done outright so that charge fits a little bit better,” said Peterson.
Clear Lake Police Chief Greg Peterson says the whole incident is one he’s never seen before.
“Well it’s the first time I’ve run into it its kind of bizarre you hear people taking children in custody cases and of course we all know of stranger abduction but this incident was a little bit bizarre,” said Peterson.
This mother agrees and says it’s a bad memory she’ll never forget.
“I don’t know like I said I never would have guessed that anything like this would ever happen,” said Showalter.
