CLEAR LAKE, IA – For Clear Lake residents it’s a time to take in a moment of history as a local icon is in deconstruction.

For years the Clear Lake water tower has been considered by many to be an icon for the city and while deconstruction began today many came out to say their final goodbyes.

“Its been a fixture for as long as I can remember and today its kind of in a way said to see a bit of history becoming a memory,” said Keith Hanson of Clear Lake.

Once used as a beacon for those on the lake, many long-time residents can now only reminisce of the experiences they had with the tower guiding them home.

“I know its been such a great landmark all these years and when your on the lake you know right where city park and everything is because of the water tower and I know it’s not used anymore but it’s still really sad to see it go,” said Debbie Etchen of Clear Lake.

City officials say they understand the significance behind the tower, but that decision is for the best.

“It would be way too costly to repaint it, to redo it. We have plenty of water available for the community with the new water tower out by the interstate so there’s really no need for this one to exist anymore,” said Mayor Nelson Crabb.

Officials also say the water tower may take several days to completely tear down, although residents of Clear Lake are in no hurry.

“Its been there for years and years and those of us who have been around here for a long time, its gonna take us a while to believe that it’s not there anymore, its gone,” said Mayor Crabb.
