How Finals Can Affect Student’s Health

FOREST CITY, Iowa – It’s that time of year again. For many college and high school students, it’s finals week. Many student do anything they can to make sure they make the grade, some study habits could be harming their health.

“Coffee and energy drinks tend to help out,” says college student Kyle Acker.

“Having study snacks is helpful for me,” adds another student Janelle Flatebo.

It seems like every student has his or her study rituals planned out ahead of time, for when the dreaded finals week rolls around.

“I’m up until sometimes 3 or 4 in the morning and then I’ll get up at like 8am and have to start all over and keep going,” explains Acker.

Whether it’s loading up on caffeinated beverages or staying up all night some student’s study habits could be bad for their health.

“It can affect the heart as far a speeding up the heart and making it beat irregularly at time too much caffeine, not enough sleep and those kind of things can create increased stress and stress is one of the things that real long-term can contribute to congestive heart failure,” says Dr. John Brady.

Doctors warn that changing your habits too much for one week can throw your system off. Instead, professionals have another recommendation for surviving the stressful time.

“Sleep is the best thing, proper diet and eating a good breakfast prior to going into the test all the things that we think when we’re younger were not the things to do they’re actually better things to do to retain that knowledge,” adds Dr. Brady.

But opinions on sleep will vary depending on who you ask…

“Finals week is typically the only time where I really care when I go to bed, so I’m really strict with what time I actually make sure I get to sleep,” adds Flatebo.

“I feel like when I sleep I lose time,” says Acker.
