MASON CITY, IA – If the weather wasn’t enough to get you outside today, Mason City’s annual city-wide Garage Sale Day was sure to please.

For spring cleaners, it’s a time to get a fresh start, but for bargain hunters, it’s a shopping spree.

“A lot of people take off work to do this, so to have it all on one day is a big deal. They don’t have to spend every Saturday or every Friday looking for something,” said Toni Gonnerman of Mason City.

Each year Mason City hosts a city-wide garage sale where homeowners are being urged to put their unwanted items on sale instead of in the garbage, proving the notion that one person’s trash can be another’s’ treasure.

“When I go to sell something, I come down on it if I can. I like to sell stuff to little kids. Stuff that they can use and need,” said Connie Manwarren of Mason City.

Although, the idea of selling your items can be used for a good cause, it’s sometimes easier said than done, especially when you become attached to those items.

Connie’s grand-daughter Destiny has high aspirations when it comes to selling her old dolls and clothes, though she its become more of a challenge then she planned.

“She was gonna sell this one doll and she ended up keeping it in the doll bed,” said Connie with a laugh.

The young entrepreneur still plans on making enough to afford to buy new dolls but also hopes to put that money to good use.

“I’m probably gonna us half the money for a children hospital charity and the rest for some new toys,” said Destiny Kinyaiya of Mason City.

For Toni, it isn’t so much the money that she believes is important, as much as it is our responsibility to get rid of our unwanted goods properly.

“If you’re not gonna have a garage sale, find a consignment store, find Goodwill, find Affordables. Theres so many people out there that can’t afford new and if you can just get rid of it and not have to throw it away. It’s saving our environment, it’s helping our economy, just everything,” said Toni.

While many garage sales have closed for the night, a number are expected to take part all through the weekend.

As one shopper puts it, there’s no better feeling of community, then buying your neighbors clothes.
