D.M. neighborhood earns historical designation

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines neighborhood has been accepted for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Greenwood Park Plats district, which briefly hosted the Iowa State Fair in the late 1800s, was given the distinction last week.

The 228 homes within the neighborhood will now qualify for a state program that provides a 25% tax credit for renovations of historic buildings.

The credit is designed to ensure character-defining features and spaces of buildings are retained.

Greenwood Park Plats is the second district north of Grand Avenue in Des Moines to earn an historical designation.
