DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Army National Guard says recruits picked up enough trash at Big Creek State Park to fill three large trash bins.
The Guard says in a news release that more than 100 recruits picked up the trash Sunday at the park north of Des Moines.
The recruits removed debris from the disc golf course, beside the shoreline, the beach near the marina and along more than six miles of roads and trails.
Brandon Ohrnstein, an Iowa State University student who enlisted last December, called the amount of trash collected “kind of shocking.”
Linda King, volunteer coordinator for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says more than 60,000 vehicles are expected to travel throughout the park this summer.
