Jury deliberates in Iowa worker abuse case

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Jurors have deliberated for five hours without reaching a verdict in the government’s lawsuit against a Texas company accused of exploiting mentally disabled workers in Iowa.

The federal jury in Davenport informed Judge Charles Wolle late Tuesday afternoon that it would return Wednesday morning to resume deliberations.

Jurors are considering the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s lawsuit accusing Henry’s Turkey Service of Goldthwaite, Texas, of discriminating against 32 former workers.

Henry’s supplied the men to work at the West Liberty Foods turkey processing plant while they lived in a shoddy bunkhouse in nearby Atalissa.

The EEOC is asking jurors to order Henry’s to pay compensatory and punitive damages to the men for what it called years of abusive living and working conditions.
