Colo. civil union ceremonies begin after midnight

DENVER (AP) — Fran and Anna Simon were joined in Colorado’s first civil union at 12:02 this morning, as hundreds of people gathered at a downtown Denver municipal building to celebrate the legalization of civil unions in the state.

The new law allowing civil unions took effect just after midnight, and both Denver and Boulder began issuing licenses immediately.

The Denver clerk’s office remained open until 3 a.m. to issue civil union licenses to couples eager to take advantage of their rights under the new law.

U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette and Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock performed several civil union ceremonies. Local judges and magistrates were also on hand.

Colorado is the eighth state to have civil unions or similar laws. Nine states and the District of Columbia allow gay marriage.
