Jury deliberates for 2nd day in worker abuse case

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A jury has started deliberating for a second day to determine whether a Texas company discriminated against dozens of mentally disabled workers in Iowa.

Jurors resumed their deliberations Wednesday morning at the federal courthouse in Davenport in the government’s lawsuit against Henry’s Turkey Service of Goldthwaite, Tex.

They have to decide whether Henry’s violated the Americans with Disabilities Act in their treatment of 32 former workers, and, if so, how much to award each man in damages.

The employees were supervised by Henry’s for decades while they lived at a bunkhouse in rural Iowa and worked at the West Liberty Foods turkey processing plant.

The trial featured testimony that the men were subjected to physical and verbal abuse by supervisors. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission brought the lawsuit.
