CLARION, Iowa – It’s day two in a high-profile murder trial and it’s been a very busy one for both sides. The jury is seated and opening statements began earlier Wednesday afternoon. Proceedings today also include witness statements and the 911 calls from the day of Gretchen Crooks’ death.

14-year old Noah Crooks of Osage is facing murder charges, accused of shooting and killing his mother last year in their home.

Today, jurors were able to see and hear evidence from the prosecution. Crooks didn’t react much as both sides started giving their opening statements

The prosecution presented evidence playing the 911 call Noah made from the Crook’s residence in March of last year.

The jury listens as Noah tells authorities he just killed his mom.

“I killed my mom with my .22. I have a dad I’ve already contacted him, she is dead,” Noah Crooks can be heard saying on the recoding. Throughout the call Crooks kept repeating the same phrase…

“I don’t know why I did it,” he said multiple times.

Three witnesses took the stand; the dispatcher who answered the call and the two deputies who were first on the scene. They tell the court what they remember from that March day more than one year ago.

Several pieces of significant evidence were submitted to the court including the .22 caliber rifle investigators say Noah used to shoot his mother. There we’re also several graphic pictures from the crime scene shown during this part of the trial Noah kept his head down not looking at the photos.

Meanwhile, we’re getting a glimpse of what the defense may bring up during their arguments.

In opening statements, lawyers for Crooks talked about some mental health issues their client suffers from and how a violent video game may have played into the shooting.

The state is expecting to call its next witness to the stand first thing tomorrow morning as the trial continues.
