NEVADA, Iowa (AP) — A northern Iowa woman has been accused of lying to people about having cancer.
The Story County Sheriff’s Office says 37-year-old Heidi Denio, of Iowa Falls, told people she was suffering from terminal cancer. Investigators say she forged a doctor’s signature on a letter to back up her diagnosis.
Authorities began a yearlong investigation into Denio after a March 2012 benefit raised more than $50,000 for her. Police say they received anonymous tips about Denio.
Authorities say their investigation determined Denio had a fictitious medical condition while continuing to receive public funds.
Police on Thursday filed charges against Denio. She faces first-degree theft, ongoing criminal conduct and forgery.
Court records do not list an attorney. There is no public number listed for Denio.
