Des Moines zoo to open $4.5 million exhibit

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines’ zoo is set to open a $4.5 million exhibit featuring indoor and outdoor spaces.

The Jaame Kwa Africa exhibit will open at Blank Park Zoo on Saturday. The three-acre exhibit is the first phase of the zoo’s first major expansion project since 2001.

The exhibit will include two black rhinoceros, an ostrich and Kori Bustards. Blank Park Zoo CEO Mark Vukovich says the Prairie Meadows Rhino Savanna is the exhibit’s highlight because black rhinos are an endangered species.

The zoo has been adding features for some time. A seal and sea lion pool opened last year, and an Australian-themed exhibit opened in 2011.

Zoo officials say construction continues on a new building for the zoo’s penguins and Aldabra tortoises. A giraffe viewing area will open this summer.
