ALBERT LEA, MN – For many states in the country, marijuana legalization is only for medicinal use, but a number of veterinarians around the country are turning to “pot” to help improve the quality of life for aging animals.

When we think of marijuana, we normally think of humans doing the smoking, but recent reports are showing vets are looking to the THC substance most commonly found in pot to increase the quality of life of pets while suffering from untreatable diseases.

“People don’t like to see their pets in pain so as they get older, its hard for someone to bring their animal in knowing they have to make the decision for the pet. So anything that we can do to make it easier for them and the pet is gonna help a lot,” said Cassandra Nelson, Veterinary  Technician with South Central Pet Care in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

With some states legalizing marijuana around the country for medicinal purposes, many veterinarians are also looking to use the THC commonly found in pot, to help improve the quality of life for these aging animals.

“People are wanting their pets to live longer. Not just six, seven years but fifteen years. It is man’s best friend so if we can help them live an extra two years people are really appreciative of that,” said Nelson.

Although South Central Pet Care does not offer the drug therapy, there are those in favor of finding new ways to help their pets.

“Yes, arthritis and treating the arthritis. Treating some of those diseases that can be treated and cost effectively. I think that’s really important to be able to do that,” said Tolli Gossett of Albert Lea.

Pets play a large role in the lives of many and according to Tolli, it’s our duty to reciprocate that care.

“For the blind and the hard of hearing, those dogs unfortunately have a very short time where they can offer us service and yet that service is very valuable and since they’ve done that, we need to reciprocate,” said Gossett.

While the Food and Drug Administration has not approved the use of marijuana for any purpose, the main ingredient in marijuana called Marinol is already FDA approved.
