Postal inspector says powder at UI isn’t a threat

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Police have determined a white powder found in an envelope at a University of Iowa residence hall isn’t hazardous.

A hazardous response team was called to campus Monday afternoon when an envelope leaking a white powdery substance was found at Mayflower Residence Hall.

The Johnson County Hazardous Materials Response Team and Iowa City Fire Department were brought in, and Iowa City Battalion Chief Brian Greer says a mail room area and front desk were cordoned off while the substance was examined.

University officials say a postal inspector checked the powder and determined it wasn’t hazardous.
