Officials investigate small explosion in Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Dubuque authorities are investigating an electrical problem that caused a small explosion inside a manhole downtown.

Police Lt. Steve Radloff says the explosion Monday afternoon behind the Dubuque County Jail caused a loud boom and a manhole cover to lift off its base and into the air. No injuries were reported.

Assistant Fire Chief Jay Imhof says it’s unclear what created the electrical problem. Power in a two-block area was cut off for a short time as authorities worked to repair it. One business was evacuated.
