Hazing: Famed Marching 100 band gets new director

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida A&M University on Tuesday announced the hiring of a director for its famous Marching 100 band, bidding to rebuild and relaunch the band suspended after a 2011 hazing scandal.

Sylvester Young, a 66-year-old alumnus and a former director of the Ohio University marching band, is coming out of retirement to rebuild The Marching 100.

The band known nationally for marching at presidential inaugurations and at Super Bowls has been suspended since the November 2011 hazing-related death of a drum major.

Interim university president Larry Robinson said Young will begin in June and has the experience and discipline to help the school determine when The Marching 100 should resume performing.

Robinson couldn’t say exactly when that might be, but didn’t rule out a return as early as this fall.
