Johnston second-grader goes to school with handgun

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Johnston police say school officials have removed an unloaded handgun from a second grade student who arrived at school with the gun concealed.

The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/16UAlh5 ) fellow students told their teacher the 8-year-old Lawson Elementary student had a gun. The school serves preschool through fifth grade students.

Police Chief Bill Vaughn says the gun was taken from the student before police officers arrived. School officials are talking with the student’s parents. Vaughn says the Polk County Attorney’s office and the Iowa Department of Human Services also are investigating.

School spokeswoman Laura Dillavou says a police officer — one of the school’s two resource officers — will be at the school Wednesday morning.
