Mason City, IA – City council members are voting yes to a nuisance property ordinance in Mason City.
They’re meant to hold property owners accountable if there’s trouble on their property, anything from drug offenses to code violations.
From landlords, to neighbors, to council members, people lined up to speak about whether the ordinances should be passed tonight.
There have been three meetings to give the public a look at what this ordinance is all about, but because a decision was expected, this one definitely had the biggest turnout.
The plan would allow the city to remove a landlord’s rental permit, or charge a homeowner or business owner to clean up their property if it’s cited as a nuisance.
Jonathon Platt, a resident of Mason City, says he and his family will greatly benefit from this passing.
“One particular property had the police visit on many, many occasions. We witnessed drug dealing on many occasions, drug drops, and fights outside the property, and obscenities being held all day through the night,” said Platt.
But a Travis Bailey, a small Landlord in town, isn’t too happy with the passing.
“Who’ve made some mistakes and I’ve certainly made a bunch of them but I’ve been given second chances. This bill will not allow those people for second chances in fact they won’t have a place to live,” said Bailey.
Property owners now must fix the problems their tenants are causing within a set time frame or else they can be fined.
They could even lose their license or permit.
Those who put the plan together used the city of Davenport as an example on laws passed to help “Problem Properties.”
