Ogden man convicted of murder for wife’s death

AMES, Iowa (AP) — An Ogden man has been convicted of first-degree murder for the strangulation death of his wife last October.

A Boone County jury returned a verdict Monday finding 28-year-old Joshua Andrew Powell guilty.

A court order indicates Judge Steven Oeth has set sentencing for June 14. First-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence in Iowa.

The Iowa Medical Examiner’s Office had found that 25-year-old Jaclyn Powell, of Ogden, died of asphyxiation due to strangulation.

Powell was arrested Oct. 21 after Ogden officers went to the Powells’ home. Investigators say Josh Powell called 911 to report that his wife was dead. Court records say Powell reported that he and his wife had fought the night before and that he’d struck her.
