MASON CITY, IA-It’s a time of year to honor those that put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve the public.
Flags are being flown at half-staff in honor of national police week with a memorial day on Wednesday.
The state of Iowa is recognizing a few officers who died in service, in particular Floyd County Deputy Levi Bowers.
Typically, Kaplan University hosts a remembrance vigil in Mason City. This year, they are moving that event to Memorial Day weekend.
Even though the date has changed, organizers say the message is still important.
“I know the risks that involved, I know the sacrifice these officers make, I know the personal sacrifices the children of the police officers make and this is a really good event to honor the police officers that are currently serving and those that have given their lives,” said Criminal Justice Department Chair at Kaplan University and former police officer , Staci Leu.
The police officer memorial will be held on May 29th at Music Man Square at 7 p-m.
It is open to the public.
