MASON CITY, IA – When it comes to grabbing a snack on-the-go, there aren’t always healthy options in those vending machines. But one north Iowa city is hoping to change that.

Snacking on the go usually means a bag of greasy, salty, or just plain unhealthy foods.

Colleen Young was looking for an alternative to the norm, and discovered Fresh! Healthy Vending.

“I thought it was a really good fit for me because I am healthy minded and like to have healthy choices available,” says Young, Owner and Operator of the machines.

The machines offer all-natural and organic products that are much healthier than what you would find in other vending machines. And if you happen to live in or near the mason city and clear lake area, you’ll be seeing these around town.

They’re being installed in seven locations including Mason City’s City Hall.

Now folks who are walking through City Hall have a healthier alternative for snacking, like pita chips, and believe it or not, the prices of the items are about the same as a traditional vending machine.

“The range of these healthier snacks is depending on what’s going to be in the machines is .75 to $2.00,” adds Young.

City Administer Brent Trout also had a hand in bringing the Fresh! vending machines to Mason City. He says putting them up around town helped with their Blue Zones certification.

“Look at what we have in our vending machines and to go to a healthier choice vending product,” says Trout.

He says having better food available will benefit not just people passing though City Hall, but employees who work there everyday.

“We feel that that will make a difference in how our employees are so far as health and wellness,” explains Trout.

The overall goal is simply to make eating better… easier.

“Keep healthier choice at the top of people’s minds and to make it easier for them to make a healthier choice,” says Young.
