A Room Makeover Well Deserved

ROOM MAKEOVER PKG

MASON CITY, IA - For one north Iowa family, pampering and a day of activities is just the key to help take their minds off of everyday life dealing with a serious illness.

For nine-year old Bailey Tickal, experiences like today will be very hard to forget. From getting pampered with her sister at the salon and horseback riding are just a few of the activities donated to her family from the Mason City community.

An opportunity her parents say can make all the difference in helping Bailey focus on being a kid again.

“I hope this really takes off and I don’t see why it wouldn’t. It’s such a great idea for them to come up with this and to see her eyes light up and the excitement that overcomes her. It’s really great for them to do this,” said Tim Tickal, Bailey’s father.

Bailey was born with a renal disease and is on the kidney transplant list. The condition forces her to attend school only two days a week with the other days spent on dialysis.

So with the help of the community, it’s not only her that’s getting the makeover, it’s her room as well.

“”It gives them their own safe place, whether that be to cry, to heal, to rest or to recover, it gives them a place that’s kind of sacred to them,” said Deidra Rattay with the My Happy Place Organization.

Members of the organization cleaned painted and organized the room while the Tickal’s enjoyed a day out.

For Tim, it’s an overwhelming experience.

“It’s very exciting, for Bailey to be chosen and to be the first build, this is great. The excitement for her to go through the day and just be pampered along with her little sister it’s overwhelming,” said Tim.

For these volunteers however, it’s all about giving back to their community. A community that’s done so much for people they hardly know.

“We are nothing without the community. The community has stepped forward and donated things. They’ve volunteered time, they’ve donated money and we could not continue this without the help of the community and they have just been tremendous,” said Rattay.

The Tickal family will enjoy dinner donated to them by Carlos O Kelly’s in Mason City as well as a room in the Clarion Inn as they await the unveiling of the new room on Sunday.
