Appeals court upholds Iowa man’s murder conviction

GREENE, Iowa (AP) — An appeals court has upheld the murder conviction of a northern Iowa man who stabbed his wife multiple times.

The Iowa Court of Appeals released its ruling Thursday on 41-year-old Thomas Petersen, of Greene. He was sentenced in June 2012 to life in prison for first-degree murder in the June 2011 death of 36-year-old Judy Petersen.

Thomas Petersen argued in his appeal that there was a lack of evidence to prove he acted with malice aforethought when he stabbed or cut his wife nearly 130 times with three knives following an argument. He was later arrested in South Dakota after fleeing with the couple’s young son.

The court ruled there was substantial evidence supporting a jury’s finding of guilt, including Petersen’s use of three deadly weapons and the multiple stabbings.
