Davenport alderman coping with sewer backup

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A Davenport alderman is cleaning up after a sewer backup caused extensive damage to his home.

Alderman Barney Barnhill told the Quad-City Times (http://bit.ly/12RwrAl) that sewer water flowed out of a toilet like “Old Faithful” early Monday after a storm poured 3.32 inches of rain on Davenport, causing the city’s sewer system to overload. Water also seeped up from the floor drain in the laundry room.

On Wednesday, Barnhill was mopping up and pulling off wood paneling. He says he also lost artwork, books and old bottles of wine.

Barnhill experienced a similar sewage backup in 1993. That time, he says it took him all summer and $13,000 to clean up and repair his basement.

Many other Davenport residents have been dealing with similar problems due to repeated storms.
