Minn. man gets life for girlfriend’s 2011 killing

ANOKA, Minn. (AP) — A Coon Rapids man has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of killing his girlfriend in 2011.

Assistant Anoka County Attorney Paul Young says 55-year-old Patrick William Benton will be eligible for parole after 30 years.

Last week, Benton was found guilty of first-degree murder while committing domestic abuse. Anoka County District Judge Doug Meslow ruled that the murder followed a pattern of domestic abuse.

Susan Courteau’s sister found her dead in her Coon Rapids home on Oct. 13, 2011. Earlier that day, Courteau had Benton removed from her house because he was drinking and had become threatening toward her.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press (http://bit.ly/14c39vA ) reports Benton returned that night and fatally stabbed Courteau. She was 44.
