Truck driver rescued from swollen creek off I80

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Officers from three law enforcement agencies jumped into a 12 feet of water early Thursday to rescue a truck driver trapped in the cab of his truck a flooded creek off of Interstate 80 about 30 miles east of Des Moines.

Jasper County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Burdess, Newton police officer Adam Herman and Baxter police officer Joe Bartello jumped into Prairie Creek at about 2 a.m. Thursday when a semitrailer was discovered submerged in the water just off the interstate.

Bartello swam underwater and through the windshield of the truck cab to lead the driver out.

The driver is identified as 70-year-old Dwayne Michael, of Granger. His condition wasn’t immediately released.

The sheriff’s office says the accident is under investigation.
