The only occupant in the pickup was 43-year-old driver Carrie Pfeil, of Akron. She was taken to a Le Mars hospital, and then flown to a hospital in Sioux City, where her condition was kept private at her request.

It’s unclear how the crash occurred.

The Iowa State Patrol says the train’s engineer and conductor realized something had happened when they saw debris from the crash.

The railroad crossing doesn’t have light or gates.
