IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa City man is charged with attempted murder after police found him holding a hammer near a man who was bleeding profusely.
Police say the incident happened on a downtown pedestrian mall shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday. Callers reported that a man was hitting another with a hammer.
Police say that 61-year-old Richard John Hoyt told officers that he hit the victim in the head several times because he mistook the other man for someone he was quarreling with.
Hoyt was arrested, and the other man was taken to a hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Hoyt is being held in lieu of $25,000 bond.
