Iowa City steps toward barring traffic cameras

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The City Council in Iowa City has taken a step toward barring traffic cameras.

It gave first approval to the measure on Tuesday. Two more votes for the measure are required before it can go into effect.

The council approved traffic enforcement cameras last year. A group of Iowa City residents subsequently conducted a petition drive against the council’s action.

City Council members said they’ll pursue the issue again in the future, after the state develops rules for the cameras’ use.
