Ottumwa man pleads not guilty to injuring toddler

OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) — A 19-year-old Ottumwa man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he injured a 2-year-old boy.

The Ottumwa Courier reports (http://bit.ly/10QNHrv) Dustin Dewayne Armstrong entered the plea Tuesday. He’s charged with child endangerment and willful injury and is being held in the Wapello County Jail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled June 14.

The charges stem from an April 22 incident in which police were called to an Ottumwa home where a toddler was unresponsive. He was taken to an Ottumwa hospital, then flown to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, where he remains.

Armstrong, who was with the boy when he was injured, says the toddler had a seizure. Before calling police, Armstrong changed the boy’s pants, put him to bed and started a load of laundry.
