MASON CITY, IA – Few people keep their lives private these days, but it could pay off for those who limit what they post on social networking sites.

A new study shows 1 in 10 young job seekers have lost a job opportunity because of their

social media profile. That includes teenagers all the way up to those in their mid-thirties.

If you’re looking for a job, you might want to clean up your posts and pictures.

Research shows almost half of hiring managers took the time to do a little digging, and what they’re finding about potential hires can be a little disheartening.

“If you were to look at someone’s account you can actually get quite a few pictures and quite a few things off that so if you’re looking for work, you might want to look at your privacy settings now,” says Tony Buhr with Manpower.

Here are some tips to help you land a job and keep up with your Facebook and twitter accounts.

Experts say be careful about posting provocative photos.

Don’t put a lot of content online that concerns drinking.

It’s good practice to not bad mouth past employers or others.
