Obama hopes for ‘new model of cooperation’

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) — President Barack Obama is welcoming Chinese leader Xi Jinping to the U.S. expressing hope that extended and informal talks will lead to a “new model of cooperation” between the two countries.

Obama spoke with Xi at the opening of two days of meetings at a secluded retreat in Southern California.

Obama says the decision to meet early in Xi’s presidential term “signifies the importance of the U.S.-China relationship.”

He says the U.S. seeks an “economic order where nations are playing by the same rules.” He called for the two countries to work together to address cybersecurity.

Obama conceded there are “areas of tension between our countries.” He said it’s in the interest of both countries to work together.
