‘Corn Crib’ back in action in Burlington

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — After some extensive repairs, Burlington’s Corn Crib is back in action.

The 4-foot-by-7-foot popcorn stand was operated by the late Hugh Meredith in Burlington for nearly 40 years.

But it was later abandoned, and the Burlington Hawk Eye reports (http://bit.ly/13NJ148 ) it was badly deteriorated when it was rescued from a field.

Richard Bangert decided to restore the stand, but he found the wood inside the metal frame had rotted and the popper no longer worked.

More work remains, and local businesses have volunteered to help, but the Corn Crib now looks like it used to, including the sign that reads “We Pop Corn By the Bushel”

Though the popper still doesn’t work, popcorn will be sold from the state at a film festival this weekend.
