MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — A foundation is leading a $1 million fundraising campaign to outfit a safe room at Mason City High School as a community auditorium.
The Mason City school district completed the safe room in 2012 with funding from a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant.
The Globe Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/17B0sKM ) the Education Foundation of Mason City Public Schools now is seeking funding for a space informally called Mohawk Performance Hall.
Foundation president Jay Lala says the campaign is off to a good start thanks to a $300,000 challenge grant from Pat and O. Jay Tomson of Mason City.
Lala says the goal is to complete a 600-seat auditorium by January 2014.
