MASON CITY, IA – You might not think a tanning salon would sell something to keep you safe, but at Oasis Tan, one thing they offer might surprise or shock you.
The news of young Kathylynn Shepard’s body being found, hit many parents hard.
Now, authorities are urging parents to find more ways to help watch their children.
“All over the United States, there’s more child abductions. So what you hope is that parents in the community look at ways to make their children safer,” said Deputy Brian Tiedemann of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department.
So in light of the recent attacks, those at Oasis Tanning in Mason City, set out to make safety a priority for customers.
You now can buy non-lethal stun guns at the salon in hopes of protecting yourself against any intruders.
Something, one manager says will come in handy for her mostly female clients.
“Most of my clients are women and about 98 percent are between the ages of 20 and 40. This isn’t something that they typically go out shopping for. I’ve sold more to people who came in and they look at it and they think, “You know, that’s a good idea,”” said Cindy Graves, Manager of Oasis Tan.
Cindy stresses that this isn’t a toy, and that while the sound alone is enough to intimidate most, the voltage is enough to keep any intruder at bay.
“For the parents they feel better knowing that their daughter has something. At least she has an option to have a chance to get away should, unfortunately something happen,” said Graves.
While Cindy acknowledges that this device isn’t for everyone, she says it’s tools like this that make all the difference.
“It makes them feel a little more safe. That they have something in their possession that they can use,” said Graves.
