As the weather turns warmer and sunnier every day, starting a summer skincare regimen should be top priority. Your skin is delicate and susceptible to the sun’s rays, so implementing a plan for ultimate protection is key.
There are several steps to maintaining a good skin care plan for summer, especially if you are a sun lover and plan on being outside. A mixture of sun blocking agents, wardrobe changes and continuous skin care is your best bet.
First things first, stock up on a good, sensitive skin sunscreen. If you haven’t bought any new sunblock since last summer or you can’t remember when you bought it, most likely its effectiveness has lessened. It’s good to start fresh. If you aren’t sure, all sunblocks are required to have an expiration date. Check the date to make certain it’s still good to use.

Who needs sunblock?
Everyone! It doesn’t matter your skin color, everyone is susceptible to the sun’s rays. The AAD recommends a waterproof, broad-based sunblock with at least 30 SPF.
What is SPF?
SPF stands for sun protection factor. The SPF number on your sunblock means that it will protect you 30 times more (if you choose 30) than without any protection.

What’s the difference between UVA and UVB?
You’ll also want to choose a block with both UVA and UVB. In essence, you’ll want protection for all kinds of ultra-violet rays. UVA causes early aging, wrinkles and can pass through glass. UVB are more likely to cause sunburn and can be blocked by glass.
Fashion-savvy skin care
Ultimately, however, staying out of direct sun is the best policy, but generally impossible if you love the sun. When you’re done basking in the sun or whether you’re heading out and want a great summery look, there are options to avoid donning big tent-like shapeless attire.

If you have oily skin, try an oil-free moisturizer.
If you’ve over-exposed your skin, or burned a little, soothe with an aloe-based gel or cream. Don’t exfoliate tender, burned skin. Use a cream with Vitamin E to add emollients back to your skin.
You can also reapply with a moisturizer that includes an SPF. This will allow the protection to sink down into your skin and keep you protected for ongoing sun exposure.
