IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Donations are being collected to pay for a monument to veterans at the site of the former National Guard Armory in Iowa City.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports (http://icp-c.com/13tPUap ) officials want the memorial to honor all those who served in the military, not only those from Johnson County.
Organizers of the effort are selling $75 engraved bricks that will be part of the memorial.
The site also will include a bench, flagpole, the old armory’s 1937 cornerstone and two panels featuring the armory’s history and photographs.
Work on the memorial will begin in July and a dedication will likely be held on Veterans Day.
The armory was demolished after being severely damaged in 2008 flooding.
