Saina named ISU athlete of the year

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State track star Betsy Saina has been named the school’s female athlete of the year for the second year in a row.

Saina won her third NCAA title last weekend, taking first in the 10,000 meters at the national outdoor meet in Fayetteville, Ark.

Saina also finished second in the 5,000 and fourth in the 3,000.

Saina won eight Big 12 titles and earned All-America honors 11 times in her career. She is the fifth Cyclone woman to win athlete of the year twice.

Golfer Scott Fernandez was named Iowa State’s male athlete of the year on Monday.
