Heavy Damage in Belmond

BELMOND, IA – The Belmond area really saw some powerful tornadoes earlier Wednesday evening.

Chief Deputy in Wright County told us two tornadoes touched down in the area, yet three were originally spotted.

Throughout neighborhoods, tree damage was quite evident.

But it’s the northwest part of town, on highway 69 that seemed to have received the most damage, including Cattleman’s Steak and Provisions Restaurant.

Just across the street, Howard Enterprise had a building left in rubble.

Many folks we spoke with tell us, while they’re used to severe weather, they haven’t experienced anything like this in a while.

Jesse Gobeli, lives right next to the Belmond-Klemme High School, and says everything changed in a matter of seconds.

“The tornado sirens go off and I saw everybody speeding by kind of looking scared so I ran downstairs with my son and we heard an explosion so we stayed down there for a while,” said Gobeli.

Chief Deputy Jeremy Hogrefe says what he is mostly concerned about it making sure no one is hurt.

“We do believe just the section north of us here some businesses have been damaged but we have had no injuries reported as of now,” said Hogrefe.

The National Weather Service will be in the area Thursday morning to survey the damage.

The last major tornado in Belmond was an F-5 in 1966.
