MASON CITY, IA — Drivers found themselves in a dangerous situation yesterday when the storms hit.
Heavy rain, wind, and tornadoes had folks pulling over and heading for shelter under interstate overpasses.
While it may seem like a good idea, it really isn’t.
Law enforcement says there are better ways to protect yourself.
“They need to pay attention to weather conditions at all times,” Lt. Dan Schaffer of the Iowa State Patrol said. “Again, plan ahead; get off the interstate before the storm strikes and you’re left out in the open.”
He says during a tornado, overpasses can act as a wind tunnel.
