MASON CITY- Authorities say several residents have reported receiving calls from someone posing as their grandchild and asking for money.
According to a press release from the Mason City Police Department, the caller claims they are in jail somewhere and need bond money as soon as possible.
Dispatch received around six to eight calls this morning between 8 – 10:30 am from residents reporting similar phone calls.
Officials say they are not aware of any victims yet, but they did want to warn residents that once money is sent, it is basically impossible to recover.
Police say if you do receive a similar call, be cautious and ask several questions like the relatives name or a call back information.
They say in most cases the relative is safe and actually nowhere near where the caller is claiming.
