U. Northern Iowa praises AAUP for delay on censure

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — The University of Northern Iowa’s new president is praising a national professors group for declining to censure the university for its handling of academic cuts.

UNI President Bill Ruud said Saturday’s decision by the American Association of University Professors gives him time to work with faculty, staff and students to address outstanding issues identified by the group.

AAUP had been considering whether to formally censure UNI over its decision last year to terminate dozens of majors, minors and graduate programs. The university said the programs had low enrollment and needed to be cut to save money, but critics said the decisions were made without proper faculty consultation.

AAUP criticized UNI administrators in a December report. But the group voted Saturday to delay any censure action until 2014, citing recent progress.
