Gay rights rally planned in Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — A coalition of organizations advocating gay rights has planned a rally in Cedar Falls on the day the U.S. Supreme Court issues rulings in two closely watched cases.

The groups Americans for Democratic Action, Working Families Win, One Iowa, UNI Proud and Sissy’s Sircus say they will either celebrate or protest depending on which way the court rules.

The court is considering whether the federal Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8 violate the U.S. Constitution’s equal protection guarantees as applied to same-sex couples.

The court is expected to rule on the cases before the end of June.

The groups say they will hold the rally at 5:30 p.m. the day of the decisions at the corner of Main Street and University Avenue in Cedar Falls.
